Cory DenUyl joined our staff in January of 2009 and has built our Wealth Management program from the ground up. He can help members with virtually any investment-related service, including retirement and financial planning as well as life insurance needs. “At ECCU, we can do most anything you would find from a larger investment firm,” says Cory. “But with a more personal, caring touch.”
Cory has been in the financial planning and wealth management field for eight years. Previously, he and his brother owned an online book business in Holland, Mich., where they bought and sold new, used, and rare or out-of-print books mostly on the Internet from a warehouse. The most unusual book sold was a mid-1800’s copy of the ‘Abolition of Slavery’ by William Lloyd Garrison, author of ‘The Liberator’ publication.
A passion for investing and finance early in life brought Cory to his current career. In high school, he won a national ‘stock selection challenge’ finishing first in the state of Michigan. Cory also began day-trading for his own investment accounts starting at age 15, which continued through college, as well as helping to manage his father’s portfolio.
Interesting enough, when we asked Cory what was most rewarding and most challenging about his work, he answered: “They’re one in the same. Every person has a range of questions, problems, goals, and challenges. The mission is to figure out from the many possibilities what strategies are best for that individual, their family or legacy. The reward is self-fulfilling, knowing I can help people and see their plans come to fruition as the years go on.”
Cory grew up in Holland, Mich., but has lived in the Grandville area for the past five years. He makes the drive to Kalamazoo every day so his wife can be closer to her work and their young son. He adds that it’s a great time to catch up on financial news or listen to an audiobook.
When he’s not serving members, Cory stays busy helping the community with charities through his work at ECCU and his wife’s work at Mercy Health. They’re part of the C4 Young Professionals, God’s Kitchen, and Mercy Health Grand Guys and Girlfriends. Cory also played a visible role in our recent fundraising effort for the Wounded Warrior Project.
He’s all about games, too. He loves to golf and play any type of game, computer, board, yard; you name it. He has a particular interest in the strategy-intensive games. (He also admits to being ‘slightly’ competitive.)
Most of his hobbies as of late have shifted to playing with and watching his 11-month old son as he grows and learns about the world. “It’s hard to find anything more fascinating than watching a child discover the enormity and wonderfulness of the world around them,” he says.
Cory concludes: “I think of my job as a filter. I take the universe of clutter, from advice, financial products, news, and narrow it down to a handful of ideas that are good for you, your needs, and goals. It’s more than just managing money; my job is to make your funds grow based on your needs and expectations and to avoid the traps many fall into when trying to go it alone.”
