It is hard to believe that Hurricane Harvey hit the east coast of Texas more than one week ago. As of this past Saturday, while weary residents in the Houston area were searching for ways to repair flooded homes and salvage possessions, others faced new orders to evacuate. Thousands remained stranded by rising waters and were still without dry shelter. Some residents have been without power and clean drinking water for many days.
Like many of you, the employees of Arbor Financial Credit Union have seen the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey and we wanted to help. As recovery efforts begin, money has been identified as the most-needed item.
For Arbor Financial, our employee-driven Caring Committee put the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” into action by unanimously voting to give $500 to the National Credit Union Foundation’s CUAid fund. This amount was matched by the credit union, for $1,000 in total donations.
We are familiar with CUAid, and 100% of the contributions go to credit union disaster relief. As donations are posted through CUAid.coop, the National Credit Union Foundation will coordinate with the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation in the disaster area to distribute money efficiently to affected credit union employees and volunteers.
“The suffering of people affected by the storm is unimaginable,” states Julie Blitchok, President/CEO. “Our hearts go out to those grappling with the aftermath. By donating to CUAid, we feel good about helping in some small way, and that the money will be put to use quickly to help people within our close-knit industry.”
We encourage people to research before giving to any charity that they are not familiar with. By using websites such as www.charitynavigator.org, you can fact-check before you make a donation to make sure they are legitimate.
