Kids underwear, “it’s like gold,” says Colleen, HR Coordinator with Communities in Schools of Kalamazoo, as she excitingly opens up a big box of donated underwear, “especially boys size 6,” she continues. It can be the smallest of items that make the biggest of impacts with kids. That is why Arbor Financial’s Caring Committee chose to hold a back-to-school drive in August and partner with Communities in Schools by donating items to the Kids’ Closet which will help ensure kids can attend school every day, all day with confidence and dignity, ready to learn.
CIS accepts donations consisting of new clothing, school supplies, and personal care products and then John, Partner Services Coordinator at CIS, distributes the items to the 20 KPS schools CIS serves. From there, Site Coordinators give the items to students in need. “Additionally, teachers can grab items for students as needed from the Kids’ Closet at their school, or they can send students down to see the Site Coordinator during the day,” says John.
“We collected $542 towards underwear and sweatpants for the Kids’ Closet! The Caring Committee matched employee donations and together we were able to donate lots of items for these kids,” says Heather, Caring Committee Member at Arbor Financial. “It just makes me smile to think about how many kids we will impact by giving them the basics and to help them succeed.”
