I had complete trust that ECCU would help me obtain the financing for my practice. I’d recommend them to any business, whether new or established.”
Dr. Josh Sundberg,
Sundberg Family Chiropractic
After experiencing numerous sports injuries in high school, Josh Sundberg was determined to pursue a career in chiropractic. “It was my sophomore year when I began treatment for knee pain through a local chiropractor, and the therapy to align my pelvis brought almost instant relief,” shares Josh. “I knew then that’s what I wanted to do with my life.” He realized his dream of becoming a chiropractor in 2014. Just months after graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, Josh was able to purchase his practice in Kalamazoo with an SBA (Small Business Administration) loan from Educational Community Credit Union.
Josh looks back on his journey to becoming a chiropractor but also his journey as an ECCU member. He was six when his parents opened his Johnny Appleseed Youth Account. “I’ve had the same account number ever since, and when I went away to school, I continued to use their services.”
Only about 30 percent of graduates are in a position to purchase a practice right out of school while a larger number work with another doctor before going it alone. Josh was fortunate to have ECCU’s backing right from the start, working with Kenny Leonard, VP Commercial Loan Services, for financing. “My first step was to write a business plan for Kenny’s review,” explains Josh. “I provided goals and objectives and projected benchmarks of success, including sales and income.”
Kenny and his team went to work on getting the SBA loan started. “Our responsibility was to ensure a seamless process with no hassles,” adds Kenny. “Keeping the paperwork and loan moving, and having a thorough, precise transaction were top-of-mind. But ensuring that Josh got his business loan secured, so the sale of the practice went smooth, was most important.”
Josh notes that not only did Kenny take a personal interest in seeing his practice launched, Commercial Loan Representative Bobbie VanBruggen was tremendous behind the scenes. “Anyone who has experienced the SBA process can appreciate having someone handle all of the paperwork so effortlessly. Bobbie was thorough and encouraging at every step.”
Today, Josh is happy to be in his own practice treating patients and grateful for his partnership with ECCU that made it possible.
